Liberal Democrats on Islington Council have called for urgent new measures to tackle the rising level of violent crime on Islington's tubes and trains.
Figures from the British Transport Police annual report show that attacks on both staff and passengers and acts of criminal damage like graffiti have increased sharply in the last twelve months. A survey carried out by Group 4 Securicor also showed that one in five adults fears for their personal safety while travelling by train.
While the fall in thefts on Islington's trains and tubes is to be welcomed, these new figures on violent crime and criminal damage are very worrying.
As the person responsible for the Tube, London's Mayor must step up the measures he is taking and go the extra mile to ensure passengers not only are safe, but feel safe.
The train operating companies also need to do a lot more work to make users feel safe both on their trains and particularly at their stations in Islington.
I and my colleagues in Islington are calling on London's Mayor and train operating companies to respond urgently to the growing violent crimewave and tackle people's fear of crime on the railways. Measures proposed by the Lib Dems are:
more visible police presence at stations.
merging the under-resourced British Transport Police with the Metropolitan Police to ensue effective police patrols across Islington's transport network.
increased use of CCTV in and around Islington's stations.
more help points at stations for passengers to get help and report vandalism.
