Residents and commuters in Islington are growing increasingly unhappy with the state of Islington's rail services, according to results of the 2004 rail survey carried out by me and other Liberal Democrats in Islington.
As part of their campaign for better public transport, we handed out thousands of survey forms at the borough's rail stations, asking rail users about their experiences and what they think the priorities for change should be.
Responses to the survey have flooded back with results showing that:
trains are too packed
tickets are not value for money
people aren't satisfied with the timekeeping of trains
the Government is doing badly at improving the rail service
the train service has got worse since the London Mayor was elected
As a frequent rail user myself I've endured my fair share of trains stuck without explanation, running late or cancelled and it can be very frustrating. It will be interesting to see what the final verdict is once we have the full results. I'm not surprised that people feel let down by Labour who promised the earth but have failed to make any real improvements to rail services.
The North London Line in particular has a bad reputation among rail travellers. It's becoming very clear from the results so far that Silverlink trains are among the worst offenders, trains are massively overcrowded, unreliable and dirty. This survey has raised some serious issues the poor state of Islington's rail services.
Bridget Fox is a leading campaigner for better public transport in Islington. As Vice-Chair of ALG's Transport & Environment Committee, she meets Ministers and Transport for London, to raise the case for investment in London's transport network. Bridget says "I won't stop fighting for better public transport for Islington."
