Liberal Democrats believe in providing high-quality public transport services which are affordable, reliable and safe. Islington is a densely populated borough - with the lowest levels of car ownership in London. So residents and businesses alike need high quality public transport, fit for a 21st century city. Yet all too often Islington is being short-changed by lack of investment, poor management and lack of vision by transport providers.
Bridget says "Last year, I carried out a rail & tube survey which showed local commuters are fed up with unreliable, overcrowded and dirty trains. That's a terrible verdict on the millions of pounds given by this Labour government to private rail operators. Whoever is benefiting, it doesn't seem to be local commuters. Liberal Democrats want to see action to invest in the rail network - but Government dithering means promised improvements stop at Islington's boundaries.
"Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone's gimmicks have left Transport for London with a huge budget gap, and travellers paying the price. Ken is determined to press ahead with the expensive and unwanted western extension to the congestion charge zone. Meanwhile, my recent investigation of the new bendy buses on route 73 found that in most cases, the smartcard readers aren't working - and unlike the Routemasters there are no conductors to check tickets. Ken's increased bus fares will raise about £80M extra - the same money lost through fare evasion. So this isn't money for new investment: it's money from honest bus users to subsidise the cheats."
Labour's record of shame:
New Northern line ticket hall at Kings Cross - work suspended since January 2004 and took over a year to restart
Thameslink 2000 - still unfunded, it's name is now a bad joke
East London Line extension - long-promised but now stopping short of Islington
Crossrail 1 still in doubt despite Labour rhetoric
Crossrail 2 - the line Islington needs most - is now off the agenda under Labour
Liberal Democrats believe Islington deserves better:
Finish the new Northern Line ticket hall.
Reopen York Road station to relieve pressure at Kings Cross.
Bring the East London line extension through Islington to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury.
Fulfil the commitment to invest in Crossrail 1 & 2 and Thameslink 2000.
Tackle bus & tube fare evasion and reinvest profits in better services.
