1 November 2004 - More than 160 main post offices could be shut down or sold off under plans being considered by Royal Mail.
Following the mass closure of urban sub post-offices, the Post Office is moving on to review its core network. This is just the latest in a series of shocking cuts to the Post Office. The government has failed to stem the loss of post office business or help them find new ways of making money.
When the Post Office closed Copenhagen Street, Amwell Street and St Peter Street they promised that was the end of the cuts. They told Islington residents to use main post offices instead. What trust can we put in their promises now?
I am working with the Liberal Democrat council to fight for a network of accessible Post Offices for our borough. Highbury Corner is a temporary building; Upper Street has no disabled access; Mount Pleasant's future is in doubt; and there is no Post Office serving the Angel.
Our Post Offices aren't perfect, but simply cutting them further is totally unacceptable. We need investment to provide modern, safe, accessible Post Offices for Islington.
