 Save our Post Offices
9 December 2004 - Shock figures show Islington hardest hit by Post Office closures

Islington is losing more post offices than the rest of the country, according to new research compiled by the Liberal Democrats. The research reveals the shocking number of Post Offices closed in the last 5 years: nearly 2,200 post offices have closed since 2000, a reduction of 12%.

Regionally London has suffered the most, losing a fifth of its post offices, and Islington has lost more than double the national average, losing over a quarter of it's post offices since 1999.

Islington has been hit particularly hard by Post Office closures, much more than the rest of the country, and local people are suffering the consequences. The closure of local post offices has already had a dramatic effect on our community, from pensioners to local small businesses. The remaining post offices are now seeing queues out of the door, while Angel has no post office at all.

This is a direct result of Labour government policies. Compulsory Direct Payment of benefits have significantly undermined post offices as viable businesses - many branches have lost nearly half their income from this change alone. While the Government has poured massive subsidies into rural post offices, Islington has seen post offices slashed - losing out under Labour.
