Friday 28 January 2005 9:06 pm Last week I led local campaigners marking a symbolic one year since the Government suspended work on the Northern Ticket hall at Kings Cross. They ordered tools to be downed - despite works being well underway - leaving us the 'hole that cost a mint'. For nearly a year residents, taxpayers and hard-pressed commuters were kept in the dark as to any future plans. Finally the Government backed down in November, and is now looking at funding completion of the works. The new ticket hall will provide a safe, accessible separate entrance to the busy Northern Line. This is:
a recommendation of the Fennell enquiry into the Kings Cross fire
necessary to provide lifts to give disabled access to all tube lines at Kings Cross St Pancras
necessary to allow the building of a modern new concourse for Kings Cross mainline station
a vital part of the Kings Cross Central regeneration proposals. The Labour government has talked big about investing in rail, but in practice has left us for over a year with a multi-million pound hole in the ground. The delay has simply added costs, with contractors having to remobilise, rehire staff, and start again on work that could have been completed by now. It was always clear that the new ticket hall is not an optional extra, so why the dither and delay£ One year on, it's time for the Government to get moving.
